Obama nominated Leon Panetta as CIA Chief and Dennis Blair as National Director of Intelligence
U.S. president-elect Barack Obama confirmed today his intelligence team lead by Leon Panetta as CIA director and Dennis Blair as National director of intelligence. Panetta was former President Bill Clinton's chief of staff.
Obama said that his choices were based on the fact that neither Panetta nor Blair have not been involved in controversial procedures used by the CIA during the George W. Bush administration in the fight against terrorism.
His remarks indicate that actions that are taken in the future in the war on terrorism must be based on the realities of the situation, not based on what the new administration believes the public wants to hear .
He promised that in U.S. will not torture prisoners and will respect the Geneva Convention with regard to the treatment of prisoners of war. He also said that any alleged human rights violations will be quickly investigated by his administration. The president-elect says the closing of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility will be an indication that his administration intends a clear break from the questionable policies of the past.
